The Challenge
This residential property was affected by severe food hoarding, with large quantities of expired and rotting food stored across the kitchen, dining room, and bedrooms. In several areas, access was restricted, with doors unable to open fully due to the volume of cans and food items.
Kitchen work surfaces were completely obstructed, mould was present throughout the kitchen and dining room, and strong odours from decomposing food were detected on entry. Essential facilities, including the downstairs bathroom, were unusable.
In addition, serious fire and electrical risks were identified elsewhere in the property, alongside a lack of heating and hot water. The conditions presented immediate health and safety concerns, requiring urgent specialist intervention ahead of the occupant’s return from hospital.

The Process
Our team carried out a structured and sensitive food hoarding clean, working closely with the family to minimise distress while restoring safety.
Non-salvageable food and waste were removed, and all affected areas were fully disinfected using specialist products. Deep cleaning was completed in the kitchen, dining room, and downstairs toilet, followed by odour control and air sanitation treatments.
Additional goodwill works were carried out to support a safe discharge from hospital, including basic mould treatment, surface clearance, removal of unusable furniture, and installation of simple storage shelving to discourage unsafe food accumulation.
All work was completed using full PPE, with hazardous waste handled in line with regulations.
The Result
The improvement was immediate.
The kitchen, dining room, and downstairs toilet were restored to safe, functional use, significantly reducing hygiene and fire risks in the treated areas. The environment was stabilised to support a safer return home, and engagement during the process helped encourage more positive long-term management.
